On Friday, June 6, 2025, Jan Gan Man English Secondary School successfully hosted a comprehensive Capacity Building Program (CBP) focused on the "Theory of Knowledge" for its teaching staff. The training was conducted in collaboration with a team of subject matter experts and was designed to enhance the educators' understanding of interdisciplinary knowledge acquisition and critical thinking methodologies. The program aimed to equip teachers with the tools and pedagogical strategies necessary to integrate Theory of Knowledge principles into their respective subjects, thereby fostering a more holistic and inquiry-based learning environment for students.
The day-long training session was attended by all secondary school faculty and was facilitated by Dr. Jyothy Ramachandran & Ms. Shruti Hadap, distinguished education consultants specializing in curriculum development. The program was structured around several key modules:
Foundations of Knowledge: The session began with an exploration of the fundamental concepts of knowledge, including its nature, sources, and various forms (e.g., shared vs. personal knowledge). Discussions focused on how different disciplines construct knowledge and the role of critical inquiry in verifying information.
Ways of Knowing: Participants engaged in interactive workshops exploring the eight "ways of knowing"—language, sense perception, emotion, reason, imagination, faith, intuition, and memory. Practical exercises demonstrated how these concepts could be applied within a classroom setting to encourage students to reflect on their own learning processes.
Areas of Knowledge: The training provided a detailed overview of the different "areas of knowledge," such as the natural sciences, human sciences, arts, history, and mathematics. Teachers collaborated in groups to identify connections between these areas and to develop lesson plans that bridge traditional subject boundaries.
Developing Critical Thinkers: A significant portion of the training was dedicated to practical strategies for nurturing critical thinking skills in students. Topics included identifying and evaluating biases, constructing coherent arguments, and fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and respectful debate.
Initial feedback from the participating faculty was overwhelmingly positive. Teachers expressed a heightened sense of confidence in their ability to engage students in deeper, more meaningful discussions about the nature of knowledge. The collaborative nature of the training allowed for the sharing of best practices and the development of a shared vision for integrating the Theory of Knowledge framework across the curriculum. The school's administration believes this training will significantly contribute to improving the overall quality of education and preparing students to be more thoughtful and discerning learners.
The CBP Training on the Theory of Knowledge at Jan Gan Man English Secondary School was a resounding success. The program successfully met its objectives of enhancing pedagogical skills and promoting a holistic educational approach. The school is committed to building upon the momentum generated by this training and will continue to support its educators in their professional growth, ultimately benefiting the students by empowering them to become independent and critical thinkers.
